Course Objectives Based on the fundamental "Fourier Optics", with a series of applications, we would like to get the essence of Fourier optics and to develop the ability for future research on the related topics.

Prerequisite

Textbook 1.Introduction to Fourier Optics 2nd Edition, Chapter 8 and Chapter 9, by J.W.Goodman

Topical Outline This course is an advanced Fourier Optics. Based on the background of Fourier Optics, we further introduce it to the application in signal processing and holography.
Course Outline:
1. Fourier transforming property of lens
2. Abbe-Porter experiment and Zernike phase-contrast microscope
3. Systems for convolution and correlation
4. Image subtraction and differentiation using grating filters
5. Pattern recognition using Vander Lugt correlator (Joint transform correlator)
6. Holography from communication point of view
7. Range-Doppler Principle and Synthetic Aperture Radar data processing
8. Deblurring using convolution (deblurring using inverse filter)
9. Fast Fourier transform
10. Binary Fourier transform hologram
11.Optical security by spatial filtering
12.Systems based on geometrical optics
13.Discrete analog optical processors
14.Acoustic-optic signal processing systems
15.Invariant pattern recognition (circular harmonic expansion, synthetic discriminant function, Mellin
transform,radial harmonic expansion)
16.Incoherent optical processing of complex data
17.Computed Tomography (Fourier slice theorem and filtered back projection)
18.Self-imaging
19.Achromatic partially coherent processing
20.Interferometric imagery
21.Achromatic system for holography, achromatic Fresnel diffraction, Achromatic optical processing
