Research Overview

Optics has been the core research area since the establishment of IOS and later DOP. With the expansion of faculty members in recent years, currently a variety of technical areas in a broad range of optics/photonics are available from which students may choose to conduct their master’s and doctoral studies. DOP is home to 12 technical interest groups and is a leader/primary contributor in those areas and different interdisciplinary research, attracting a broad array of corporate and governmental support. These technical interest groups are:

  • Thin-Film Optics
  • Solid-State Lighting and Human Factor Technology
  • Display Technology
  • Holography & Optical Information Processing
  • Solar Cells
  • Optical Communications
  • Lasers
  • Optical Engineering and Design
  • Biophotonics and Bioimaging
  • Nanophotonics
  • Optoelectronics
  • Theoretical Optics

After the grand opening of Kwoh-Ting Optics and Photonics Building located next to Jhongda Lake in the northwest corner of the campus, the number of labs in DOP rapidly increases to more than 50. In addition, there are 3 DOP-affiliated research centers on NCU campus: Optical Science Center (OSC), Thin-Film Research Center (TFTC), and Solid-State Lighting Research Center, all of which offer opportunities for not only educational experiences for DOP’s students but also for corporate participations and collaborations.

The intellectual work produced by DOP shows great quality and quantity. We constantly have more than 60 publications yearly in the world’s topnotch technical journals, including those published by Optical Society of America, IEEE, and American Physical Society, to name a few. The faculty also vigorously joins large-scale interdisciplinary research projects to push the envelop of the science and technologies in different forefronts of optics and photonics.
