Ph.D. Degree Requirements
  1. Students must take the following courses with at least 7 courses passed before their graduation:
    • Optical Waves in Crystals
    • Fourier Optics
    • Geometrical Optics
    • Radiometry and Detection
    • Laser Physics
    • Interference in Optics
    • Electromagnetism
    • Microelectronics.
  2. Students must take and pass the seminar course for at least six semesters. Those who report early graduation (i.e. graduate from the Ph.D. program within three years) will not be constrained by this regulation, but they must take and pass the seminar in every semester during their Ph.D. study.
  3. Students who have taken the above-listed 8 courses offered by the Department before enrolling in DOP's Ph.D. program and scored 70 or above are eligible to file a course waiver request form to the Department one week before their first semester with DOP begins. Those who took above-listed courses at other graduate institutes prior to entering DOP's Ph.D. program must submit the course waiver request form along with the official transcript(s) and course syllabus (syllabi) issued by the previous graduate institute(s) for review.
  4. Students who never took or failed in Electromagnetism (and/or Microelectronics) prior to enrolling in DOP's Ph.D. program must take the undergraduate Electromagnetism I or II (and/or Microelectronics I or II) and score 70 or above.
  5. A minimum of 18 graduate-level credits must be earned within the Department and students must maintain an average grade of 75.
  6. To be eligible for filing the Ph.D. final defense request form, students must complete the required courses, pass the qualifying exams, and have accumulated more than four publication points.
    • A total of four points is granted for one journal publication recognized by Science Citation Index (SCI).
    • A publication not published in a journal covered by SCI will subject to the review of DOP Academics Committee.
    • At least half of the publication points accumulated upon graduation shall be contributed by SCI journal publication(s).
    • An international conference paper counts one point and no more in the total accumulated publication points.
    • The percentage of contribution and thus the publication point(s) from authors in the author list is given in Table 1. Students' advisor will be always considered as the last author in the author list.

Table 1 Percentage of Contribution from the Authors Used in the Calculation of Students' Ph.D. Publication Points
