Department Profile

The Department of Optics and Photonics (DOP), formerly known as the Institute of Optical Sciences (IOS), is one of the largest producers of optical/photonics engineers in the country. It is generally agreed that both DOP undergraduate and graduate programs are among the top 3 nationwide. DOP currently has 22 full-time faculty members, 4 jointly-appointed professors, 8 adjunct professors and approximately 300 graduate students and 180 undergraduate.

All DOP faculty members are involved in 11 areas of research and education – thin-film optics, solid-state lighting, optical information processing, solar cells, optoelectronics, theoretical optics, optical communication, laser, optical engineering and design, biophotonics and bioimaging, and nanophotonics. Moreover, DOP is home to Thin-Film Technology Center and Solid-State Lighting Research Center and a key player in Optical Sciences Center, a university-level research institute at National Central University. In recent years, DOP faculty members have been on average acquiring research grants and contracts of more than NT$50,000,000 per year from government and industrial sources.
