OSA022 Microelectronics
Last Revised: 2020-04-14
Course Objectives
This course provides an introduction to the basic devices and circuits in modern microelectronics. Students will first learn basic semiconductor devices and electronic circuits composing of diodes, BJTs and MOSFETs. This is one of the fundamental and pre-requested courses in photonics, electronics and electrical engineering.
Students will learn how to analyze the electronic circuits with equivalent models. Some fundamental applications of the components will also be covered (including the power amplifiers, oscillators, and filters).
Prerequisite
Textbook “Microelectronic Circuits” 7th edition, Sedra / Smith
“Microelectronics” 2nd edition, Behzad Razavi (optional)
Topical Outline Introduction
- Amplifiers and circuit model
- Single-time-constant (STC) frequency response
Diodes
- Junction diodes characteristics and rectifier circuit
- Physical operation of pn junction
Bipolar Junction Transistors (BJTs)
- Device structure and physical operation (biasing and small signal)
- BJT amplifier and frequency model
MOS Field-Effect Transistors (MOSFETs)
- Device structure and physical operation (biasing and small signal)
- MOS amplifier and frequency model
