Biography

Dr. Pei-Hsun Wang was born in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, in 1984.  He received the B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from National Chiao Tung University (NCTU), Taiwan, in 2007, and the M.S. degree in Photonics and Optoelectronics from National Taiwan University (NTU), Taiwan, in 2009.  He went for the obligatory military service as an army second lieutenant, Communication Officer, during 2009-2010.  After that, he was at the Ultra Fast Optics Lab in National Taiwan University (NTU) as a research assistant, where he was engaged in research projects in in-vivo optical virtual biopsy.  In 2011, he joined the Ultrafast Optics group, world leaders in broadband photonic signal processing and ultrafast pulse shaping, at Purdue University, USA, where he was a key team member in research projects in microresonator-based frequency combs and later received his Ph.D. degree from the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN, USA, in 2016.  His research interests include ultrafast optics, silicon photonics, and fiber communications.  During 2016-2019, he joined Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), a premier semiconductor industry company as a principle engineer.

He has authored or coauthored 16 SCI journal papers and 24 conference papers in the novel area of ultrafast optics and micro-resonator-based comb applications.  His numerous awards include the outstanding thesis award of the Physical Society of the Republic of China, Taiwan, in 2009, the achievement award for Mandatory Service, Taiwan, in 2010, and the scholarship of the Phi Tau Phi Scholastic Honor Society, Mid-America Chapter, USA, in 2013.  During 2012-2016, He was a Member of both OSA and IEEE, and serves as a Reviewer for Optics Express and Scientific Report.  He was also invited as a session chair in session New Effects in Microresonators in 2013 IEEE Photonics Conference.

Current Research Areas

Frequency comb generation has become attractive topics due to its versatility in applications requiring multiple laser sources with precise frequency.   A frequency comb is a spectrum constructed by a series of discrete frequency components which are equally spaced in frequency domain.  This technique has been widely applied in optical communication, optical sensing, frequency metrology, arbitrary waveform generation, and astronomy.   Recently, microresonator-based comb generation based on nonlinear optical modulation in high quality factor microresonators has been proved to be a potential candidate for next generation comb sources.   Through cascaded four-wave-mixing (FWM) process, a pump photon transforms into two sideband photons and cascadedly yields a full comb spectrum.  This integrated platform helps to build a portable frequency comb source with low-noise and high coherence.  It also strongly reduces the required system footprint and operating power.
