Biography

Dr.Yen-Hung Chen was born in 1968 in Taichung, Taiwan, R.O.C. He received the B.S. degree in nuclear engineering in 1991 and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in nuclear science in 1999 from National Tsinghua University, Hsinchu, Taiwan. He is currently an associate professor with the Department of Optics and Photonics (DOP), National Central University (NCU), Taiwan. His research interests are in the area of nonlinear optics, integrated laser and waveguide devices, solid-state lasers, and ion optics.

Dr. Chen majored in optics and photonics related programs for his Master and Ph.D. degrees and has continuously devoted to the optics and photonics related research subjects and projects since 1992.

Between 1997 and 1998, he joined the world-famous ion optics group led by Prof. Dr. H. Wollnik at II. Physics Institute, Giessen University, Germany and worked as an exchange research scholar.

Between 1999 and 2003, Dr. Chen joined Prof. Yen-Chien Huang’s lab at Department of Electrical Engineering, National Tsing-Hua university as a postdoctoral research associate. In this period, he has been in charge of the operation and management of a micro-fabrication facility and led a team of graduate students in devoting to the development, fabrication, and characterization of the advanced nonlinear laser/photonic devices.

In February 2004, Dr. Chen joined the faculty of the DOP at NCU. He aims to establish a world-leading lab at the field of nonlinear integrated laser photonics. The on-going research topics and projects have covered areas in advanced quasi-phase-matching (QPM) crystal designs and fabrications, nonlinear integrated bulk/waveguide laser devices, and high-power solid-state lasers.

In the field of optics and photonics, he has published over 65 scientific papers in international journals and conferences. Dr. Chen is an inventor of three Taiwanese patents and three USA patents disclosing new actively Q-switched laser techniques, high-efficiency nonlinear optical frequency converter and amplitude modulator, and novel holographic storage device, respectively. In past 5 years, he has been the PI or co-PI of over 12 research and industrial-academic collaboration projects. Dr. Chen is currently a member of the Optical Society of America (OSA) and the International Society for Optical Engineering (SPIE).

Dr. Chen is mild, humorous, optimistic, dedicated, honest, and helpful. His personality has certainly contributed to his positive attitudes for life, people, and research work. He believes a successful career always belongs to those who can manage themselves efficiently in time and “space” among life, people, and work.

Current Research Areas

The research group in Nonlinear Integrated Laser Photonics Lab (NILP) has devoted to the studies on the area of nonlinear integrated bulk and waveguide laser devices based on the integration of the advanced nonlinear optics, laser optics, and integrated optics technologies. These devices are capable of performing multiple optical functions in a monolithic crystal, including laser generation, wavelength conversion/tuning, amplification, modulation, switching, multiplexing, spectral filtering, and so on. These research subjects include:

1. Nonlinear optics: Quasi-phase-matching (QPM) technology, advanced QPM materials, novel QPM devices.
2. Integrated laser and waveguide devices: Phase I. Multi-function bulk and waveguide laser devices in monolithic lithium niobate (LiNbO3) crystals of integrating advanced QPM, electro-optic (EO), impurity doping, and distributed-Bragg-grating writing techniques to achieve simultaneously the laser generation, wavelength conversion/tuning, amplification, modulation, switching, multiplexing, spectral filtering, and so on. Phase II. LiNbO3-Si integrated system chips.
3. Integrated microchip Solid-state lasers: all-solid-state RGB lasers, microchip lasers, monolithic all-PPLN/APLN internally Q-switched and self-frequency-conversion lasers, multi-wavelength EO PPLN/APLN Q-switched lasers, tunable and single-frequency laser systems.
4. Ion optics: laser mass spectrometry.
